All private renters should be allowed to keep pets, South Australian housing support group Shelter SA says.
The organisation says pets are a very important part of people's lives.
"There are undeniable links between pets and good mental health," it said in a statement on Thursday.
Shelter SA checked on 544 properties listed for rent across a selection of Adelaide suburbs in May and found that only 49 or just nine per cent were pet-friendly.
It also opposed the wider introduction of pet bonds on rental properties to cover any potential damage.
"There is no evidence that they will increase the number of pet-friendly rentals on offer," the organisation said.
"People are already struggling to pay their rent and enter the private rental market because of unaffordability and a pet bond is just another barrier."
