New rental reforms have been introduced
into the ACT Legislative Assembly, which is centred on occupancy agreements
for student accommodation, boarding houses, emergency housing & caravan
parks.
More clarity of the rights and obligations
for landlords or "grantors” and "occupants” are amongst the proposed changes.
There will be mandatory minimum protections
for tenants such as protections against unreasonable evictions and access to
communal areas.
The proposed changes will also make it
easier for a tenant to exit a share house arrangement. Presently, a rental
agreement could end on a share house, if one of the tenants leave.
